The passage I last read was “The Bet” by Anton Chekhov.
This passage was about a young
lawyer and old banker who argued which was the worse punishment between capital
punishment and life imprisonment. The lawyer agreed that life is better and bet
the banker two million to stay in confinement for 15 years.
The lawyer stays in a room in the
banker’s garden. He had no contact with the outside world except through a
small window. He was allowed to smoke tobacco, drink and write. He read novels,
philosophy, languages and religious readings.
To find out if he still had skills,
the lawyer asked the banker to fire two shots in the garden if his effort was
good enough.
The fifteen years came and the
banker realized he would lose all his assets if he pays the lawyer two million.
The banker went off to the lawyer having the intention to kill him when he realizes
that the lawyer gave up on everything. Life is just life.
Personal Reflection: The themes of this passage “Wisdom and
Knowledge” because the lawyer learned many things during his confinement and “Life”
because the lawyer realized life is better than dying.
Personally
I believe life is better to live than dying, but just staying behind bars to
prove a point for fifteen years is not my thing. The lawyer sacrificed his time
and life to show the banker that life is to live and capital punishment is
inhumane.
The
patterns of organization are Cause and Effect and Chronological.
